This year's AWS Summit was all about cloud computing. We were there and took away many exciting facts.

Bringing the cloud community together, networking, collaborating and learning more about Amazon Web Services – that was the goal of the AWS Summit in May, which was held as a face-to-face event in Berlin for the first time again in two years. We from audeoSoft were there!

For those who are new to the abbreviation AWS, it stands for Amazon Web Services – a US cloud computing provider that is accessed by services such as Dropbox and Netflix, among others. While we're on the subject: Cloud computing is the term used to describe the provision of IT resources via the Internet, as needed. The whole thing is usually chargeable, with prices depending on the individual use of the corresponding cloud storage. Since 2017, AWS has been classified as a leading provider in cloud computing. audeoSoft has been an AWS partner since 2006. This makes us one of the first IT service providers worldwide to offer cloud systems from Amazon Web Services as infrastructure for their own customers. Therefore, it was clear for us to attend this year's Summit. Together with our managing directors Peter Termöllen and Marcel Termöllen, our development team traveled to the event in Berlin, where around 7,000 participants were counted.

On site, AWS announced that it would be adding 18 new services to its own C5 resources. This, according to the company, is to ensure that AWS complies with applicable EU law.

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) uses a certification system that, for example, can use C5 to prove the effectiveness of security measures in the event of a cyber attack and the security of cloud areas in compliance cases, and can also be checked by independent third parties. This makes the system particularly interesting for customers in data protection-sensitive Europe. Because there, reliable controls with the C5 system are important when working with authorities. AWS also announced a new partnership with T-Systems. Following the Schrems II ruling by the European Court of Justice and an invalid Privacy Shield agreement, the collaboration is said to aim to transfer data between Europe and the United States to the new regulations, adapt regulations and make them more secure.

In addition, AWS used the summit to make a clear commitment to Germany as a business location. In addition to Dresden, where the hyperscaler is increasingly working on key components for the security of its EC2 hypervisor, AWS locations in Aachen, Berlin and Tübingen are focusing research and development work on industry-ready artificial intelligence (AI). For example, under the heading "Predictive Maintenance", developers in Aachen are working on using AI and machine learning to predict when which component in a production plant or vehicle is going to become defective. This knowledge ought to enable improved maintenance.

Our highlight topic at the AWS Summit this year was Sustainability in Software Development.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important, in this area in particular, but also in every other sector. Amazon is very active in this field, among other things in the sub-topics of cooling servers and renewable energies – which means that we are also well positioned. Our conclusion: It was an exciting summit, from which we were able to take away some topics for the future.
